How to Work with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights for the Abolition of the Death Penalty
About the course:
This e-training provides information and support on the functioning of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), as well as concrete advocacy opportunities for civil society actors and organizations who are interested in working with this human rights body for the abolition of the death penalty. While this e training will focus on advocacy for the abolition of the death penalty, the tenants of this e-training are also applicable to other areas of human rights.
The methodology behind this e-training is based off of a guide of the same name published by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty and the FIACAT in 2020, as well as numerous in-person and virtual trainings organized amongst our members and partners.
Course organization:
This e-training is organized into 3 sections, with lessons in each section.
- Section One – Introduction to the training.
- Why is the ACHPR an important mechanism to work with?
- What do you already know?
- Section Two- What is the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights?
- What is the ACHPR and how does it operate?

- Section Three- Options for Interaction

Following each lesson, there will be questions you will need to pass in order to move forward in the course, as well as additional resources in each lesson that will provide a deeper understanding of the subject matter. We recommend starting this e-training with materials to take notes and a way to bookmark interesting additional resources that may be important to your work.
